Weather and Safety: North Coast Under Alert
Meteorologists have issued a yellow warning for high waves (4–5 meters) along the entire northern coastline of the island.
- Who is affected? Anyone planning a trip to areas such as Porto Moniz, Seixal, or São Vicente.
- What this means: The natural lava pools in Porto Moniz and Seixal will almost certainly be closed for safety reasons. Avoid walking on piers and low-lying coastal paths.
- Our recommendation: Enjoy the view of the wild ocean from a safe distance. Save your swimming for the calmer southern coast.

Great News: Ideal Conditions for Whale Watching
While the north coast is dealing with rough seas, the south coast (around Funchal, Calheta) is reporting calm waters and excellent visibility. Today is a perfect day for a boat trip to see dolphins and whales.
New in Funchal: The Easter Markets Are Opening
The traditional markets are opening today in the center of Funchal on Avenida Arriaga. You’ll find local specialities, handicrafts, and even folklore performances in the afternoon. A great idea for your afternoon plans.
Notice: Morning Closure at Cabo Girão Viewpoint
One of the most famous attractions, the Cabo Girão glass skywalk, is closed this morning for maintenance. It will reopen after 2:00 PM (14:00). We suggest visiting the nearby town of Câmara de Lobos in the morning and heading to the viewpoint in the afternoon.
Status of Hiking Trails and Levadas
According to the latest information from the Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN), the following restrictions are in place:
- PR1 Vereda do Areeiro (Pico do Areeiro ↔ Pico Ruivo): This trail remains partially closed. Only the section from Pico do Areeiro to the Pedra Rija viewpoint is accessible.
- PR10 Levada do Furado: This trail is currently fully closed.
- Open and safe trails: Safe and fully accessible trails include PR8 Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço and PR9 Levada do Caldeirão Verde.
Important Notice: Always respect the signs and do not enter closed sections. Check the current status of all recommended trails on the official IFCN website before you hike.
