Airport Disruptions: Check Your Flight Before You Go
Strong wind gusts of up to 75 km/h are causing significant disruptions to air traffic at Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport today. Over twenty flights have already been cancelled this morning, and more have been diverted.
- Who is affected: Anyone scheduled to fly to or from Madeira today.
- What this means: There is a high probability that your flight will be cancelled, diverted, or significantly delayed. The terminal may be overcrowded.
- Our recommendation: Do not travel to the airport without confirming your flight status. First, check the latest status of your flight directly with your airline or on the airport’s website. If your flight is cancelled, follow the airline’s instructions.
Travel Around the Island and to Porto Santo
The disruptions are not limited to the airport. Here’s an overview of the situation for other modes of transport.
Getting to Porto Santo Island
Air travel between Madeira and Porto Santo was suspended this morning. The only reliable option for travel between the islands today is the Lobo Marinho ferry. However, be aware that the service will be busier than usual due to passengers re-routing from the airport.
Road Traffic in Funchal
During the morning rush hour, traffic jams were reported around Funchal. If you are planning to drive in the capital, allow for extra travel time just in case.
Current Status of Hiking Trails (Levadas and PR Routes)
Strong winds pose a significant risk, especially at higher altitudes and on exposed sections. We strongly advise against attempting ridge hikes today, such as the trail between Pico do Arieiro and Pico Ruivo.
The Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN) also reports the following restrictions:
- PR 10 Levada do Furado: COMPLETELY CLOSED
The trail between Ribeiro Frio and Lamaceiros is closed due to a landslide and path damage. For your safety, do not enter this trail under any circumstances. - PR 6 Levada das 25 Fontes: Expect Crowds
The bypass route is closed for maintenance, meaning the main path is operating with two-way traffic. It can become very congested, especially around midday, making it difficult to pass. We recommend starting early in the morning or considering an alternative route. - PR 3 Levada do Pico do Castelo (Porto Santo): Temporarily closed for maintenance.
Our Tip: How to Enjoy Your Day Despite the Bad Weather
The wind doesn’t have to ruin your day. Instead of hiking on the mountain ridges, consider visiting sheltered spots in Funchal. Explore the historic center, visit the Mercado dos Lavradores, the CR7 Museum, or one of the local wine lodges to taste Madeira wine. The botanical gardens can also be a good option, as their lower altitude often protects them from the strongest winds.
