Weather and Sea: Calm Morning, Rainy Afternoon

This morning is favorable for excursions, with the sky mostly overcast but dry. Make the most of this time, as rain is expected to arrive mid-afternoon, becoming more frequent in the west of the island. Temperatures in Funchal remain pleasant, reaching up to 22°C.

⚠️ Warning: Strong Waves on the North Coast

  • Who is affected? Anyone planning a trip to the north coast (e.g., Porto Moniz, Seixal) or the island of Porto Santo.
  • What this means: A yellow warning is in effect for waves of 4 to 4.5 meters until 6:00 PM today. The south coast is significantly calmer.
  • What we recommend: Avoid swimming and do not venture onto piers, cliffs, or the edges of natural pools on the north coast. Enjoy watching the waves from a safe distance.

Status of Key Hiking Trails (PR)

Mountain hiking requires careful planning today. The most popular route from Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo is not fully accessible. Here is an overview of the most important changes:

  • PR 1 Vereda do Areeiro (from Pico do Areeiro): The trail is ONLY PARTIALLY OPEN. From Pico do Areeiro, you can only reach the Ninho da Manta / Pedra Rija viewpoint (approx. 1.2 km). The direct route to Pico Ruivo is closed.
  • PR 1.2 Vereda do Pico Ruivo (from Achada do Teixeira): This trail is OPEN. This is the best and easiest way to summit Madeira’s highest peak, Pico Ruivo, today.
  • PR 1.3 Vereda da Encumeada: This trail is CLOSED.

Tip: When planning your hike, remember that a €3 entrance fee applies to non-residents on selected trails.

Tips for Today’s Itinerary

Morning: Mountains, Levadas, and City Sights

Take advantage of the stable morning weather. Ideal options include the hike to Pico Ruivo from the Achada do Teixeira car park (PR 1.2) or a walk along one of the levadas on the south of the island. Exploring Funchal is also an excellent choice.

Afternoon: Indoor Gastronomy and Culture

Once the rain starts, take cover in one of Funchal’s many attractions. Today is also a great opportunity to visit the famous Mercado dos Lavradores. There will be a presentation by chefs for the upcoming Michelin guide gala, making the atmosphere even more exciting. Other options include museums like the CR7 Museum or Blandy’s Wine Lodge.
