Weather Calms, Mountains Recovering

After a windy start to the year, Saturday finally brings calmer conditions to Madeira. The wind has significantly weakened, and the storms have ceased. The weather will be mostly overcast with a chance of light showers and temperatures between 15 and 19°C. For hiking, this means safer conditions, but the terrain in the mountains is still very wet and slippery.

What This Means in Practice

  • For mountain hikers: Expect reduced visibility, mud, and waterlogged paths. High-quality waterproof footwear is an absolute must today. Dress in layers.
  • For other travelers: It’s an ideal day to visit the botanical gardens in Funchal, stroll along the coast, or explore the towns, where rain won’t be a major issue.

Key Information: Trail Status as of January 10, 2026

Although the weather has improved, the aftermath of the recent rain and wind is still evident. The Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN) strongly warns of the risk of falling rocks and landslides in many areas. Please respect the official closures for your own safety.

🔴 Fully CLOSED Trails (DO NOT ENTER!)

  • PR 9 Levada do Caldeirão Verde: Unfortunately, one of the most popular levadas is closed due to a high risk of landslides. Please do not violate the closure.
  • PR 1.3 Vereda da Encumeada
  • PR 7 Levada do Moinho
  • PR 10 Levada do Furado (Ribeiro Frio – Portela section)
  • PR 16 Levada Fajã do Rodrigues
  • PR 20 Vereda do Jardim do Mar

🟡 Trails with Restrictions or Requiring Extra Caution

  • PR 1 Vereda do Areeiro: The ridge trail is officially open only from Pico do Areeiro to the Ninho da Manta viewpoint. The section continuing towards Pico Ruivo is still considered dangerous and remains closed.
  • PR 5 Vereda das Funduras: This trail is passable again, but expect a large amount of mud.

Don’t Forget: Mandatory Trek Registration

The new regulation requiring mandatory registration for selected hiking trails via the Simplifica platform is currently a hot topic. While it’s sparking debate among locals, the situation is clear for tourists.

What This Means for You

If you are planning to hike one of the popular PR trails (e.g., PR1), you must have a valid online registration. Have the QR code ready on your phone for potential checks to avoid a fine. Authorities may be stricter today due to the media attention on this topic.

Transportation and Tips for Today

Airport Operating Normally: Operations at Cristiano Ronaldo Airport have returned to normal after the windy days. Arrivals and departures are running on schedule. Nevertheless, we recommend checking your flight status before heading to the airport.

Event Tip in Camacha: If you’re in the Camacha area, don’t miss the international orienteering festival. In the afternoon (approx. 2:30 PM – 6:00 PM), the “City Race” stage will take place, which is also open to the public. Expect an increased number of runners and minor traffic restrictions in the town center.
