Personal hike notes

The Levada do Rei trail is one of those hikes that reveal Madeira in its wildest and most natural form – without forcing you to scramble up steep climbs or clamber over boulders. It’s the ideal choice if you’re looking to relax the day after a challenging trail, yet still want to spend time exploring the beauty of the island.

Stretching just under 11 kilometres (round trip), this trail offers not only views of the island’s lush northern slopes, but more importantly a passage through a living forest, where the sound of trickling water, birdsong and moist, clean air fill your senses.

It all begins modestly, at the Quinta Levada do Rei restaurant with a small car park, where you can enjoy an espresso and a pastel de nata before heading out. But as soon as you step onto the levada path, the world begins to shift. The wide forest track gives way to a narrow trail flanked by water, cloaked in mist, and shaded by laurel trees draped in hanging lichens. At every turn, the landscape reveals another scene worth pausing for.

The hike begins at a well-marked trailhead where you’ll find parking and refreshments. The path starts as a broader dirt road, which gradually narrows into a ledge trail with steel cables for safety and stunning views into deep green ravines. The combination of humidity and shade creates ideal conditions for ferns, mosses, and moisture-loving plants that line the trail throughout.

At the end lies Ribeiro Bonito – a natural amphitheatre framed by moss-covered walls, ferns, and cascading waterfalls. Along the way, expect a few fun technical elements, such as a short tunnel (no headlamp needed) and a “shower” waterfall that pours directly over the path. Thanks to its minimal elevation gain, the Levada do Rei hike is also suitable for less experienced hikers or families with older children.

The best time to visit is early in the morning, when the trail is quieter and the lighting in the forest is at its most magical. While this hike is accessible year-round, it can become slippery in sections following heavy rain – especially near the waterfall crossing.

Recommended gear includes sturdy hiking shoes with good grip, a lightweight waterproof jacket (for the waterfall and occasional fog), a flashlight or phone torch for the tunnel, plenty of water, and a small snack. Mobile signal is limited along much of the route.

On our return, we decided not to retrace the same path. Around halfway back, we diverged slightly from the levada, climbed just above it, and explored a higher trail running a few metres above. If you do the same, you’ll discover spots like the scenic Posto Florestal Cascalho viewpoint and traditional farming terraces. The trail loops back to where it started – the perfect moment to relax and enjoy a well-earned meal at the Quinta Levada do Rei restaurant.
